Condiments in Space: The Final Frontier

The Space Shuttle Endeavor is back out on the launch pad in anticipation of its August 8th launch date. Minimus.biz, the world leader in all things travel-sized, will also be back out on the launch pad for their second tour in space.

According to NASA’s website, “Today astronauts have more than 200 different food and beverage choices to select from.” NASA obtained Kraft® Miracle Whip Dressing, Tabasco® Brand Pepper Sauce, Kikkoman® Soy Sauce, and Knott’s Berry Farm® Orange Marmalade. Each of these products has gone through a special testing process at NASA before they were approved for use.
Previously, for an earlier supply mission to the International Space Station, NASA ordered Kraft® Horseradish Sauce, Grey Poupon® Dijon Mustard, Smucker’s® Seedless Orange Marmalade, Ocean Spray® Jellied Cranberry Sauce, Sue Bee® Clover Honey, and others from Minimus.biz. “It’s exciting for us to be able to offer people such a wide variety of condiment choices, including astronauts orbiting the earth,” said Minimus.biz Co-Owner and VP of Marketing Paul Shrater.
Many brands were excited to hear that their products were headed into space. "At Kraft, we know consumers are passionate about the zip that Miracle Whip spread can bring to any meal," said Brendan Honan, Senior Brand Manager for Miracle Whip at Kraft Foods. "Now the Miracle Whip zip literally has been brought to the next level - into outer space!" Space veterans at the Tabasco brands were also excited for their latest round in space: "We're honored NASA has chosen Tabasco sauce to be included on the upcoming Space Shuttle mission," said Paul McIlhenny, president & CEO of McIlhenny Company. "Having been on Skylab, aboard space shuttles Columbia and Discovery and on the International Space Station, we are proud to continue this tradition aboard Endeavor."

Minimus in the New York Times

I can't help but mention our mention in the New York Times a week ago Sunday. It was fun to be covered by two publications of such notoriety within 4 days of each other (The Wall Street Journal being the other one). To humble myself, I shall wash my mouth out with soap. Well, maybe not. How about a 5% discount coupon off some soap, instead? Until this coming Sunday, you can use the code LEVER5OFF for 5% off the Lever 2000 1oz bar soap.

Minimus.biz Featured In the Wall Street Journal

It's Paul back for a post on the blog... While I used to like giving out secret coupon codes on the blog here (and I will get back to it soon), I'll take a moment to share a piece of fun news... we were featured in the Wall Street Journal today. The WSJ is a members-only website, so a hyperlink won't help (if you are a member, you can click here.

"Your lotions and potions are now cleared for boarding again -- as long as you can find some bottles small enough to put them in... Minimus.biz, for example, limits its inventory to toiletries (plus food, cleaning supplies and other ephemera) in three-ounce containers or less... Site: Minimus.biz; Offerings: A wide selection of travel-size toiletries, free shipping for domestic, FedEx ground-shipped orders over $20 and a free plastic bag to use at the airport if you enter "ZIPLOCK" in the special instructions box during checkout; Sample price: one-ounce Lubriderm Lotion, 79 cents." -- The Wall Street Journal, Page D2, October 5, 2006
Okay, since they mention a sample price for Lubriderm as $.79. I'll go one better and offer our blog readers a 5% off coupon on Lubriderm. Just use the coupon code DERM5OFF at checkout. Expires 10/31/06. See, I told you I'd get back to secret coupons on here. And, if you didn't know about abour Ziploc program, click here for more details.

Minimus Co-Founder Appears On CNBC

Our Paul Shrater had a very busy morning last Thursday. As he routinely does around 7 a.m., Paul checked his email and was surprised to see a message from a reporter at CNBC, requesting an immediate on-camera interview.

The request was being made in light of the terrorist threats that were uncovered in London last week and the resulting ban on liquid items in carry-on luggage. The reporter wanted to interview Paul about how the new restrictions might affect air travelers, and how businesses like ours might help. The reporter asked Paul if he could be in the studio within the hour.

Paul immediately called Harris Kaufman (our VP of Business Development) and asked if he could deliver some of our products to the studio in Universal City where Paul was to be interviewed. Harris grabbed some products, dashed off to the studio, and arrived in time so that our products could be part of the interview and presentation.

Paul explained during his interview that because travelers will no longer be able to carry-on their personal liquid toiletry items, they will now have to pack those items into their checked luggage (that have weight restrictions with surcharges for overages). He said that people will now likely purchase smaller, travel-sized items in order to conserve precious space and weight in their luggage.

According to Paul, “Minimus is in the process of expanding its product line to accommodate air travelers as they deal with these new restrictions, and we are also offering a wide array of new delivery options to serve our customers’ needs.”

It was indeed a hectic and busy morning for Paul and Harris but in light of the events in London, and the consequences for air travelers everywhere, they were only too glad to help.

Spicing Up Space Meals: Minimus.biz Supplies NASA & the International Space Station with Travel Condiments

Los Angeles, CA – December 22, 2005 – Since its launch a year and half ago, Minimus.biz has quickly become ‘the’ place to go for individual and travel size items. Last week, NASA came to Minimus.biz and purchased several different travel size condiments to send with the astronauts to the International Space Station.

“We are ecstatic to be working with NASA on their portion package needs. We have a lot of varied and interesting customers coming to Minimus.biz, but I think NASA tops them all,” said Minimus.biz Vice President of Marketing Paul Shrater. The astronauts will now be able to liven up some of their space meals with small packets of Kraft® Horseradish Sauce, Grey Poupon® Dijon Mustard, Heinz® Barbeque Sauce and Seafood Cocktail Sauce, Smucker’s® Seedless Orange Marmalade, Ocean Spray® Jellied Cranberry Sauce, and Sue Bee® Clover Honey.

“We’re thrilled that NASA has selected us,” said Becky Serafini, senior brand manager, Heinz Foodservice marketing (Ketchup, Condiments & Sauces). "It's an honor to be chosen as part of the program."

Discussions are underway for additional products carried by Minimus.biz to be sent into space, but all of them must go through a special testing process at NASA before they are approved for use. Jim Powell, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Sioux Honey Association, makers of Sue Bee® Honey, said “we were excited to learn our honey packets passed the test in the NASA labs and will be sent up into space.”
